Can I use a stair runner without doing a hallway runner at the top of the stairs?

I have hardwood floors in a new home. I am installing a stair runner on the stairs so they are less slippery for my kids. But I'm planning to leave the hallways on the second floor with just hardwood. Is this a good idea? Or does it look better to do the hallway runner as well if you are doing a stair runner?

Answer:
Lucky you! Me, I'm still waiting to have my stairs done with a runner. I will have a runner done for the hall also to make it look softer, cut down on noise and keep everything looking co-ordinated. Are you using sisal?
