How do you remove a 90 degree on hard wood stairs?

There is an end cap on the stairs that a previous owner put there. How do I remove it? It is about 1/2 and inch thick. When you walk down the stairs that is what you step on, the stairs are not wide enough to have it on there. What can I get to make it look finished after I take it off?

Answer:
There are rounded shoe molding pieces you can buy that you can nail in and putty the nail holes and no one will see it. It will look finished becasue the shoe molding is so nicley finished and rounded out. You can even buy it already primed and painted white if you need it white, or you can buy it natural and stain it to whatever shade you need.
