How do you measure square footage for floor coverings on stairs?

I have nine steps on the first flight and then a 4x4 landing and then another seven steps. Each step is 40 inches across, and is 7 inches high and 12 inches deep. What would the measurement be for carpet?

Answer:
You need about 25 feet of length for the steps alone. If you purchased a 25' long carpet however the waste would be huge since carpet is 12 or 15 feet wide. You would be best off to purchase a piece of carpet 12'x13'. If you cut two 40" wide strips for the stairs, you will be left with a 5'x13' for the landing. This will leave you 9'x5' waste which is pretty good for a staircase.
If you are planning to install the carpet and need any detailed instructions, feel free to e-mail.
