What is the best glue to lay a carpet runner on stairs?

Before I tack the runner to the stairs, I am going to glue it to the stairs. Any suggestions as to which type of glue is best to use for this purpose?

Answer:
most installers will use an electric stapler and will just staple around the edges of the runner on the actual step....although I have never glued down carpet on steps I see nothing wrong with it.......they make a lot of different brands of carpet glue......I would just get one that is especially made for carpet and has a super grip quality....the max grip is kind of pricey though.....instead of going to a store like Lowes, you can more likely find a kind like that at a local flooring store....
